To achieve maximum comfort in the winter, your home should be equipped with a whole house humidifier. Humidification is one of the most important components of indoor comfort, yet it is commonly overlooked. In the winter, the average home’s relative humidity is an extremely low 15%. Whole house humidifiers can deliver up to 50% more humidity in your home.

A whole house humidifier can keep your family comfortable and protect your home from drying out. It can help keep your family comfortable in the winter by reducing parched air that causes a dry nose and throat and itchy skin. A humidifier can also prevent furniture, woodwork and hardwood floors from drying out and cracking. Finally, it can help increase energy efficiency because humidified air feels warmer than dry air, allowing you to turn down the temperature setting on your home’s heating and air conditioning system.

Selecting a whole house humidifier with the proper output of humidification depends on the size of your home and how well it is sealed. Humidifier output is measured in gallons produced per 24-hour period and is determined by three factors:

  • The area being humidified: the volume of the home, including ceiling height.
  • The air change rate: how well your home is sealed, categorized as tight construction, average construction or loose construction.
  • Humidification load determination: the amount of moisture already produced in your home from cooking, showering and breathing. This amount can be subtracted when selecting a humidifier.

Dry air can be the source of many ailments and can make your home an uncomfortable place to be. Humidifiers can provide a range of health and comfort benefits:

  • Humidified air will make your home feel warmer, so you can set your heating system to a lower temperature and still be comfortable.
  • Help reduce inadequate humidification, one of the major causes of respiratory infections during cold weather.
  • With today’s humidifier designs, there isn’t the worry of your humidifier spreading germs.
  • Maintain the proper relative humidity in your home to help protect your furniture, woodwork and hardwood floors. Dry air can sometimes result in warping and splitting of these products.
  • Dry air promotes static electricity. To avoid being zapped every time you touch something or someone, increase the humidity level in your home.
  • Protect computers, home stereos, and other electrical equipment from harmful static discharges.
